La Porta Nuova is an Anglo-Italian pop-rock band, formed in 2021 around the creative flair of British singer-songwriter William Jones. The Welsh musician, who has been based in Turin for about a decade, has surrounded himself for this Italian adventure with a group of some of the best musicians in the Savoy province. These include names whose biographies are closely connected to the Pinerolo area, such as guitarist Ivano Gruarin, who was part of Disco Inferno at the beginning of the millennium, but is also remembered in these parts for the brief adventure of Aida, a truly extraordinary instrumental prog band, who deserve to be rediscovered today. A valued teacher and sought-after session-man, engaged on several fronts thanks to a high-calibre eclecticism, Ivano completes the official line up of La Porta Nuova, together with Jones himself, Alex Bonacci (drums) and Francesco Vecchia (bass).
In La Porta Nuova’s discography, however, two ‘external’ contributors are also fundamental, present since the first EP Elisa in 2022, and both connected to the Pinerolo area by origin or adoption. These are the keyboard player Paolo Gambino, a sort of ‘fifth Beatle’, who plays the piano parts; and singer Alessandra Turri, whose lines often intertwine as a counterpoint to Jones’ lead vocals.
With this line-up, La Porta Nuova have recently released their second EP entitled Glorious Day: four tracks that continue the discourse started by the previous single and, also with great coherence, the artistic history of its bandleader. Jones was the founder of Friends, an indie-pop band with a thirty-year history, in which the singer-songwriter approach has always blended very naturally with folk and rock strands, in a completely personal mixture. Nor does the new album escape these considerations. The icy sophistication of a post-prog ballad, with a predilection for acoustic sounds, remains the prevailing stylistic line, but the desire to broaden the sound palette is evident, looking for small, but decisive and coherent, stylistic digressions.
The title track, for example, a celebration of the communal sense of home and family, is built on a climax that leads to the coda, over three minutes long and performed a cappella by the London Community Gospel Choir. An obsessive repetition of the chorus that infuses the entire song with a sense of infinite spirituality. Or the energetic guitar riffs of If I Ever Wake Again, a story of the traumas of a World War II veteran, which recall the atmosphere of arena rock. Not to mention Where Did It Go? and What’s the Ending? in which the unusual arrangements of the strings take on a fundamental and alienating role, sometimes delivered by a quartet, sometimes challenged through fascinating solo interventions.
Affections, nostalgia for the passing of time, war and its consequences, dreams and human aspirations. The themes of Glorious Day converge in a work with delicate tones, in which the mastery of the performers, far from seeking abstruse solutions to stand as protagonists, is placed at the service of the emotional slant that unites all the music of La Porta Nuova, thanks above all to some practically perfect arrangement work. La Porta Nuova è una formazione pop-rock anglo-italiana, nata nel 2021 attorno all’estro creativo del cantautore britannico William Jones. Il musicista gallese, di stanza a Torino da circa un decennio, per questa avventura italica si è attorniato di un gruppo di musicisti tra i migliori della provincia sabauda. Tra questi, anche alcuni nomi la cui biografia è strettamente connessa al territorio pinerolese, come il chitarrista Ivano Gruarin, già nei Disco Inferno a inizio millennio, ma ricordato da queste parti anche per la breve avventura degli Aida, prog band strumentale davvero straordinaria, che oggi andrebbe assolutamente riscoperta. Apprezzato insegnante e ricercato session-man, impegnato su più fronti grazie a un eclettismo di elevata caratura, Ivano completa la line up ufficiale della Porta Nuova, insieme allo stesso Jones, ad Alex Bonacci (batteria) e a Francesco Vecchia (basso).
Nella discografia della Porta Nuova risultano, però, fondamentali anche due apporti “esterni”, presenti fin dal primo EP “Elisa” del 2022, entrambi ascrivibili al Pinerolese per origine o adozione. Si tratta del pianista Paolo Gambino, una sorta di “quinto beatles”, esecutore delle parti di pianoforte; e della cantante Alessandra Turri, le cui linee si intrecciano spesso e volentieri come contrappunto alla voce solista di Jones.
Con questo organico, La Porta Nuova ha recentemente pubblicato il suo secondo EP dal titolo “Glorious Day”. Quattro tracce che proseguono il discorso inaugurato dal precedente singolo e, con grande coerenza, anche la stessa storia artistica del suo bandleader. Jones è stato il fondatore dei Friends, una band indie-pop dalla storia ultra-trentennale, nella quale l’approccio cantautoriale si è sempre amalgamato con grande naturalezza a venature folk e rock, in una miscela del tutto personale. Anche il nuovo album non esula da queste considerazioni. L’algida raffinatezza da ballata post-prog, con una predilezione per le sonorità acustiche, rimane la linea stilistica prevalente, ma è evidente il desiderio di allargare la tavolozza timbrica, ricercando piccole, quanto determinanti e coerenti, divagazioni stilistiche.
La title track, ad esempio, celebrazione del senso comunitario della casa e della famiglia, è costruita su un climax che conduce alla coda di oltre tre minuti eseguita a cappella dal London Community Gospel Choir. Un’ossessiva ripetizione del chorus che infonde all’intero brano un senso di infinita spiritualità. Oppure gli energici riff di chitarra di “If I Ever Wake Again”, storia dei traumi di un veterano della seconda guerra mondiale, che riportano alle atmosfere dell’arena rock. Senza contare “Where Did It Go?” e “What’s the Ending?” nelle quali assumono un ruolo fondamentale e straniante i peculiari arrangiamenti degli archi, a volte inseriti in quartetto, a volte interpellati tramite fascinosi interventi solistici.
Gli affetti, la nostalgia del tempo che passa, la guerra e le sue conseguenze, i sogni e le aspirazioni umane. Le tematiche di “Glorious Day” convergono in un lavoro dalle tonalità delicate, in cui la maestria degli interpreti, lungi dal ricercare soluzioni astruse per ergersi a protagonisti, è posta al servizio del taglio emozionale che accomuna tutta la musica della Porta Nuova, grazie soprattutto a un’opera di arrangiamento praticamente perfetta.
