Leftover

You’ve laid the plan, it’s direct action, the nights you wait up late
You sit in squats reliving dreams from 1968
Workers of the world it’s time, unite and rise again
It’s all going to change, it can’t stay the same

You educate and agitate, organise, campaign
You talk about the revolution coming any day
Armalite and gelignite, detonators, fuse
You’ll plant the bomb, you’ll kill the pigs then watch it on the news

Every riot you were there
Paris, Prague and Grosvenor Square
Placards, chants and storming crowds
Flares and flames and slogans yelled so loud
Dissolve you in the sound

Boxes full of tattered fliers piled up in the hall
Chairman Mao and Che Guevara plastered on the walls
Red Brigades and IRA you’re with them all the way
Whatever the name, we all want the same (don’t we?)

Celebrate the first of May
Demonstrate for equal pay
A work to rule or general strike
It happened once, feels like another time
Feels like another life

Strategies and ten-year plans
Denim flares and long-haired bands
Comrades, friends, united we all stand, and join hands

Fifty years of broken dreams
Blind belief, abandoned schemes
One more time that people’s song
And cheap Chianti all night long

No-one cared ‘cause no-one heard
Turned the page, blocked out the words
So what did happen, where’s the change?
The world just turns the same old way again
The same old way again
I can’t believe I’m saying
Was everything in vain?

Secrets

If I told you a lot of things I know you’d soon get up and go
Say for God’s sake that’s absurd
But if I shared all the empty space inside me, the essence of my quiet life
You’d hang on every word

Some things are better never said, should be left behind for dead
Best abandoned in your bed

Well I can’t say the promises you made will in any way persuade me
To open up my past
But what I might do is give you just a small clue, then do the best you can do
To elaborate the rest

Secrets are better left unshared, just as if we never cared
Just a notebook in my head

Secrets, if I tell can you keep them
Or will you sell them so very cheaply
They’ll be all over tomorrow’s news

Secrets, if you just tell your best friend
And they whisper to the next friend
It’s like a virus without a cure

Secrets, can I trust you tomorrow?
Or will you give me grief and sorrow
Or even kindness, and can I choose?

Drifting

Was good to hear your voice ring clear out of the blue
I ought to say I’m sorry for not getting back to you
I thought for so much time, I planned to stay in touch
And now it’s not something I want so much

Was strange to see your words jump straight out of the screen
I didn’t want to read them so I just guessed what they’d mean
There’s hardly any news, at least not worth waiting for
Even though I’m restless I’m not drifting any more

I spend the evenings keeping from the wind and icy rain
I think I’ll soon be moving on again

It’s all so long ago and now I just can’t find
The reason for my silence and for yours
Left everything behind, had one thing in my mind
I really can’t remember any more
What it’s all for

Everywhere I’ve been and everything I’ve seen
Every day’s as vivid as a dream

It doesn’t matter now, so many things have changed
A few remain the same but I’m not sure
I let things slip away, I couldn’t really say
Why nothing’s as important as before
Not any more

Even though I’m trying I’m not fighting any more
Even when I’m flat out on the floor

The years just disappeared, I didn’t see them fly
The time I didn’t waste but didn’t use
The things that make me cry I never told you why
And the wars I couldn’t win but didn’t lose
At least that’s true

Shoreline

I’m going to say goodbye and sail away
And I’ll leave you on this cold deserted shore
After all this time it’s feeling strange
‘cause I know I won’t be staying here any more
There’s going to be a storm beyond the harbour
Dragging me from home, stand right out front, keep facing forward
Some way I can’t see we’ll meet again
But I’ll always have this moment in my mind

I’m going to turn around and walk away
But I’ll see you on some warm and distant shore
Memories of today will fade to grey
But tomorrow brings the same dreams as before
Open out the sail and cut the water
Ride across the tide, face right behind, look back towards me
Somewhere in my mind we’ll meet again
Even though I know it may be many years
